Early life:


        Anna Modyal Mani was born on 23 August 1918 in Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram in an ancient Syrian Christian family. Her father was a civil engineer and agnostic. She had a large family consisting of eight children and she was the seventh child. As a child, he wrote a lot. She was influenced by Gandhi’s activities during the Vaikom Satyagraha. Inspired by the nationalist movement, he wore only Khadi clothes.

 

        The Mani family was an aristocratic upper-class business house. Where from childhood, male children were prepared for high-level careers. But this did not happen with Anna Mani. By the age of eight, she had read almost all the books in Malayalam in her public library and all the English books by the age of twelve. On his eighth birthday, he refused to accept the gift of a set of diamond earrings from her family.

        The world of books had opened her up to new ideas and inspired her with a deep sense of social justice that informed and shaped her life. When it was time to choose the subject, she felt free to decide in favor of physics because physics was her favorite. was the first choice. In 1939 he completed B.Sc. Honors degree in Physics and Chemistry from Pachaiyappa College, Madras. In 1940, she received a scholarship for research at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. In 1945, she went to Imperial College, London to pursue a bachelor’s degree in physics. Although he had expertise in meteorological instruments.

        After graduating from Pachai College, she worked under Professor Solomon Pappaiah. She was an Indian physicist and meteorologist. Anna Mani was a meteorologist and while growing up became the Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department she retired from this post. and further worked as a visiting professor at the Raman Research Institute. She has made many contributions in the field of meteorological instruments. Published and published several papers on radiation ozone and wind energy measurement. She researched the optical properties of rubies and diamonds. She wrote five research papers and earned her Ph.D. dissertation, but she received a Ph.D. that was not awarded. Because she didn’t have a master’s degree in physics.

        When she returned to India in 1948, she joined the Meteorological Department in Pune. By 1953 she had become the head of the division with 121 men. Anna Mani wanted to make India dependent on the means of weather. She standardized the drawings of a hundred different weather instruments. From 1957:58 onwards, she established a network of stations to measure solar radiation.

        Devoted to her work, Anna Mani never married. She was associated with many scientific organizations like Indian National Science Academy, American Meteorological Society, International Solar Energy Society, World Meteorological Organization, WMO, International Union for Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, etc. She was the recipient in 1987.

        In 1969, she was transferred to Delhi as Deputy Director General. In 1975, she worked as a UBUMO consultant in Miss. She retired in 1976 as the Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department.

She suffered a stroke in 1994 and died on 16 August 2001 in Thiruvananthapuram.
