Know why the earth shakes again and again in Turkey

Turkey is considered one of the most dangerous places for earthquakes. Tectonic plates are the reason for frequent earthquakes here. This country with a population of eight crores is situated on four tectonic plates. As soon as one of these plates moves, there are strong tremors in the entire region.

The largest part of Turkey lies on the Anatolian Plate, which lies between two major plates, the Eurasian and the African, as well as a smaller Arabian Plate. As the African and Arabian plates shift, the whole of Turkey starts moving. According to the statistics of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, in the year 2020 itself, there were more than 33,000 earthquakes. Of these, 322 had a magnitude greater than 4.0.

The most devastating earthquake in Syria, therefore, occurred in an area of Syria where civil war has been going on for more than a decade and the affected area is divided between the government and the rebels. The buildings here were already weakened or damaged by fighting in rival-held Syrian territory. The earthquake added fuel to this fire.
