The 90s were full of controversies, scandals and unconfirmed gossip. Before the former Princess of Wales sat down in the infamous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, viewers were left to guess everything she was going through.
Enter Andrew Morton. The author, who (it’s safe to say) has a genuine interest in the royal family, released a memoir based on Diana’s life in the public eye. After years of refusal from the Palace, after his death it was revealed that Diana was in fact the main source of information for the book. But, by this point, it had already sold millions of copies worldwide – and even inspired a movie.
So, who exactly is Andrew Morton? And what has he been releasing since then?
After graduating from the University of Sussex, the writer worked for the Daily Star, Daily Mail and the now-defunct News of the World until the late 80s. A few years later, he wrote an “unofficial” biography of Princess Diana. In 1993, the book was turned into a made-for-TV movie starring Serena Scott-Thomas.
After Diana’s death in 1997, Andrew revealed that the princess had sent him tape recordings to help him with the book. A few weeks later, she released a new version titled Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words.
The success of Diana’s biography enabled Andrew to write two more about the royal family. A book about Prince William was released in 2011 to coincide with the Royal Wedding – while Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, was published in 2018.
Andrew has built a successful career as a celebrity biographer. He has also covered the lives of Madonna, Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie.
