Who is Penny Knatchbull? Everything you need to know about Prince Philip’s closest female confidante

According to Prince Philip’s biographer, the royal befriended the Countess when “her life began to fall apart.

In The Crown season five, Prince Philip’s affair with not one but two women is at the center of the film. First: Queen Elizabeth II of Imelda Staunton, his wife—and leader—of nearly four decades. another? Penny Knatchbull is a woman who is 30 years younger than him. (A note to the reader: spoilers to follow.)

Penny (also known as Countess Mountbatten of Burma) is technically a relative by marriage to Prince Philip: in 1979, she married Norton Knachbull, grandson of Philip’s favorite uncle, Louis Mountbatten. She and her husband live in Broadlands – the same 86-acre property where Philip and Queen Elizabeth spent their honeymoon in 1947.

In the early 1990s, Prince and Penny developed a friendship. The catalyst was a tragic one: Penny’s five-year-old daughter, Leonora, died of liver cancer. Philip consoled the grieving mother and even helped her develop a new hobby: driving. Prince thought that the sport he took up at an older age after retiring from polo might have been a distracting outlet.

“Philip encouraged Penny Romsey (now Countess Mountbatten) to drive,” Ingrid Seward wrote in a biography of his wife, Prince Philip Rietveld. “She expressed interest in this driving thing” and asked her if it might be possible to teach her daughter’s pony.

Their closeness, as well as their age difference, gave rise to speculations of the affair. (This wasn’t the first time: in the 1950s, Prince Philip even quelled rumors of marital discord.) The Crown takes a careful look at what really happened between these two: “She’s yours. is half her age,” said Queen Elizabeth of Stanton.

In Philip during a state visit to Russia, where he admitted that he had to look for a “companion” elsewhere. “When I’ve done nothing wrong, I shouldn’t be asked to give up something,” says Philippe of Price.

There is no evidence that the two were more than friends—Seward wrote in his biography that he had seen the two happily and openly dancing at a ball, an act he described as “completely innocent. ” as it suggested they had nothing to hide. ,

In fact, Penny was publicly embraced by many Windsors, not just Prince Philip: in 1991 she stood on the balcony with the entire royal family for Trooping the Colour, and in 2006 she starred in the documentary Ten Days That Made Contributed to The Queen. She often attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show as a guest of the royals, being photographed by the media in the process.

Prince Charles also gave Penny’s daughter Alexandra at his wedding. When Prince Philip died in 2021, she was one of 30 invited to his funeral; This year she also attended the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth.

Late Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter called the rumors of an affair between Prince Philip and Penny “nonsense”. It’s also worth noting a comment Philip made in 1991 to a reporter who inquired about his loyalty: “Good god, lady,” he said back. “Have you ever stopped to think that over the years, I’ve never gone anywhere without a policeman with me? So how can I avoid anything like this?”

As the saying goes, no one knows what happens behind closed doors. So, in this case, it’s best to acknowledge the fictional drama of the case being sensationalized – involving the writers of The Crown.
