According to mythological beliefs, the three worlds were ruled by King Bali. Mahabali had a special attachment to his subjects. The people were very happy under his rule.

King Bali, with his strength and might, defeated all the gods in the war and gained control over the three worlds including the Devas. Then Lord Vishnu took the Vamana avatar and measured the three worlds in three steps, taking the promise of three steps of land from the great donor and Mahabali King Bali. Lord Vishnu was pleased with King Bali and made him the lord of Hades. It is believed that on the day of Onam, King Bali comes to the earth to meet his subjects and travels from city to city. The people of Prithvi Lok decorate their homes to welcome their king.
