Kargil Vijay Diwas 2022: 26 July is celebrated as an important day in Indian history. This day is dedicated to the martyr soldiers who lost their lives for their country. This day is celebrated every year on 26 July in honor of the Kargil War heroes. The Kargil War was fought (May-July) between the Indian Army and Pakistani infiltrators and the army in the Kargil district of Kashmir and on the high peaks of the LOC (Line of Control). India launched ‘Operation Vijay’ to control the Kargil sector from infiltration by Pakistani troops and Kashmiri terrorists on the Indian side of the Line of Control.

Kargil Day marks the heroic victory of the Indian armed forces against Pakistani infiltrators between May-July 1999 in the Drass, Kargil, and Batalik sectors of western Ladakh.
The Kargil War, in which the country lost over 500 soldiers, was declared over on July 26, 1999, when Indian troops pushed back Pakistani troops, a large part of them from the neighboring country’s Northern Light. The Indian Army recaptured the strategically important peaks captured by Pakistan in Kargil from the infantry. , This day (July 26) is celebrated all over the country as ‘Kargil Vijay Divas to commemorate the victory of India.
History of Indo-Pakistani War of 1999
After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, relations between India and Pakistan were strained but the countries deferred military conflict until the Kargil War. The nuclear tests conducted by both countries in 1998 had created tension in both countries, apart from this separatist forces in Kashmir were also engaged in terrorist activities in the decade 1990 and were in contact with Pakistani terrorists.
No country wanted this war, in fact, they even signed the Lahore Declaration in February 1999, promising a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict. However, in the winter of 1998–1999, elements of the Pakistani Armed Forces sent Pakistani troops and paramilitary forces across the Line of Control (LOC) into Indian territory. It was named “Operation Badri”. This was done to weaken India’s military position in the region and break the link between Kashmir and Ladakh, causing the Indian Army to withdraw from the Siachen Glacier and call for a settlement in the Kashmir dispute.

A day in honor of this glorious victory of the Indian Army, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated with great pride all over the country. Every year, the Indian Prime Minister pays homage to the martyrs at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. A Kargil War Memorial is also located at the foothills of Tooling Hills in Dras. Created by the Indian Army, a beautiful poem titled ‘Pushp ki Abhilasha’ is engraved at the entrance.
This year, Union Minister Smriti Irani flagged off a bike rally in Jammu and Kashmir to commemorate the day. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed a state gathering, speaking about the war and the valor of the Indian Army.
Trivia – Apart from all the esteemed celebrations, there are a few Bollywood movies like LOC Kargil which are based on the events that happened during the war, though every detail may not be accurate, it gives a glimpse of this coveted bravery.
