Marin was born in Helsinki but grew up in Pirakkala, where she studied from high school until graduation in 2004. Her parents divorced when she was very young, and she was raised by her mother and a female partner of her mother. She later studied Administration Science at the University of Tampere (MA, 2017). Sana Marin’s political journey
Marin, who worked as a bakery and cashier, joined the Social Democratic Party’s youth wing in 2006, and two years later she ran for a Tampere city council seat. Although the attempt failed, she took the field again in 2012 and won. The following year she was made the chairman of the council.
Marin remained in that position after a successful campaign and victory for parliament in 2015. Two years later he was elected as the First Deputy Leader of the Social Democrats and was also elected to the city council. However, after Rinne’s mishandling of a pay dispute involving the postal service threatened the dissolution of the coalition government, she stepped down, and on December 10, 2019, Marin was elected as Prime Minister of Finland.
At that time, Marin was 34 years old. Thus Marin became the youngest female head/prime minister of any country in the world. She succeeded Rinne as head of the Social Democratic Party in August 2020. Marin was considered one of the more left-wing members of the party and was praised for her clear thinking and focus on policy. Their agenda focused on Finland’s social welfare program and the focus on social equality and climate change issues.
During the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Marin’s cabinet imposed a state of emergency in Finland to mitigate the pandemic. When Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven could not attend the European Council meeting in October 2020 due to his mother’s funeral, Marin stepped in to represent Sweden. In return, Marin asked Lofven to represent Finland at a council meeting later that month.
