However, after Rinne’s mishandling of a pay dispute involving the postal service threatened the dissolution of the coalition government, she stepped down, and on December 10, 2019, Marin was elected as Prime Minister of Finland.
At that time, Marin was 34 years old. Thus Marin became the youngest female head/prime minister of any country in the world. She succeeded Rinne as head of the Social Democratic Party in August 2020. Their agenda focused on Finland’s social welfare program and the focus on social equality and climate change issues.
During the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Marin’s cabinet imposed a state of emergency in Finland to mitigate the pandemic.
