Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, in the Sadiya town of Tinsukia district in the state of Assam, Northeast India. He was the eldest of his father’s ten children. His father’s name was Shri Neelkanth and his mother’s name was Smt. Shanti Priya Devi. Bhupen Hazarika got music from his mother as an inheritance.
He wrote and sang his first song at the age of about 10 years. At the age of 12, he worked in the second film of Assamese cinema, “Indramalati”.

Education of Bhupen Hazarika
- His early life was spent in Guwahati, Assam and he completed his intermediate studies from there.
- After this, he completed his post-graduation in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University.
- After this, he completed his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York.
Bhupen Hazarika’s marriage and Family
In 1949, Bhupen Hazarika went to Columbia University to study and there he met Priyamvada Patel. There was love between the two and in the year 1950, both of them got married. In 1952 AD, a son was born, whose name was Tej Hazarika.
In 1953, Bhupen Hazarika returned to India with his family. After coming to India, he did work teaching at Gauhati University. The job did not last long and resigned. Due to financial constraints, his wife Priyamvada Patel left him.
Career of Bhupen Hazarika
After leaving Priyamvada Patel, he made music and wrote his companion. After this, he gave songs in superhit films like “Daman”, “Gajgamini”, “Saj”, “Darmiyan”, “Kyun” etc. Bhupen Hazarika wrote about a thousand songs and 15 books in his lifetime. Produced the upcoming serial “Don” on Star TV.
His best songs are ‘Dil Hoon Hoon’, ‘O Ganga Tu Behti Hai Kyon’, ‘Joothi Muthi Mitwa’ etc. Songs written by Bhupen Hazarika touched crores of hearts. Bhupen Hazarika also sang in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and many other languages. He sang Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite bhajan “Vaishnav Jan” in the film “Gandhi to Hitler”.

Bhupen Hazarika Bridge
The country’s longest Dhola-Sadiya bridge built over the Lohit river (a tributary of the Brahmaputra) in Assam, which was unveiled by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on May 26, 2017, was named after Bhupen Hazarika.
Bhupen Hazarika’s death
Bhupen Hazarika, a versatile genius, passed away at the age of 85 on November 5, 2011, in Mumbai.
The Indian Postal Department released a cent of 10 commemorative postage stamps in memory of 10 eminent playback singers of the country on 30th December 2016. Among them was a postage stamp on Bhupen Hazarika.
