The coach became romantically involved with a Celtics employee, which presents a violation of the Boston club’s code of conduct.

With Ime Udoka on the bench, the Celtics returned to the Finals after a 12-year absence. After only one year as coach of Boston, the coach will have to step aside.

This Thursday, through a press release, the Celtics reported that Udoka received a one-year suspension for “violations of team policies.” It was added that the decision takes effect immediately.

Boston chose to separate the coach after Udoka had a consensual relationship with a worker of the organization. The foregoing represents a violation of the Celtics’ code of conduct.

Turner Sports’ Chris Haynes noted that Udoka has no intention of resigning despite the suspension. However, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said the coach is not guaranteed to return to TD Garden after next season.

With Udoka penalized, it was added that Joe Mazzulla, who has served as the Celtics’ assistant since 2019, will be named interim head coach.

Udoka takes a stand

After the Celtics’ decision was made known, Udoka apologized for his behavior and acknowledged his wrongdoing. He added that he will not talk about it anymore.

“I want to apologize to players, fans, the Celtics organization, and my family for letting them down,” he said, according to ESPN. “I apologize for putting the team in this difficult situation and accepted the decision. Out of respect for everyone involved, I will not comment further.”
