Raman earned his master’s degree in physics from Presidency College, University of Madras, in 1907. Initially working as an accountant in the finance department of the Indian government, he later pursued a career in academia.

In 1917, Raman became a professor of physics at the University of Calcutta. His research on the scattering of light in various substances led to his remarkable discovery in 1928: when light passes through a transparent material, some of the light that is deflected changes in wavelength.
