Jamie made her film debut in the 1978 horror film Halloween, in which she played the role of Laurie Strode. The film, which proved to be a major hit, was considered the highest-grossing independent film of its time, earning acclaim as a classic horror film. She was then cast in several horror films, earning her the title of Scream Queen.
‘The Fog‘ was her next film directed by Halloween director John Carpenter. In February 1980, the horror film opened to rave reviews and critical acclaim, but a strong box office, launching Curtis as a horror film starlet.
Her next film, Prom Night, released in July 1980, was a low-budget Canadian slasher, for which she earned a Genie Award nomination for Best Performance by a Foreign Actress. The film was similar to Halloween, but It received negative reviews which marked it as a tedious and boring entry in the then-popular slasher film genre. That same year, she also starred in ‘Terror Train’, which opened in October to similar negative reviews as Prom Night. However, both films did very well at the box office.
