Atlas Ramachandran Biography
Mathukkara Muthidatha Ramachandran was born on July 31, 1942 in Thrissur, Kerala in a family with a rich cultural and literary background. His father, the late V. Kamalakar Menon, was a poet who regularly held Akshara Shlokam recitation sessions at his home. Ramachandran was the third and second son of his parents’ eight children. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in commerce from St Thomas’ College, Thrissur, affiliated to the University of Kerala, Ramachandran moved to New Delhi for work.
Ramachandran started his career in the banking industry in Delhi. He joined Canara Bank after graduating from Delhi School of Economics with a Master’s degree in Economics. He later joined State Bank of Travancore as Field Officer, Accountant and Manager after being selected as Probationary Officer by State Bank of India. He was the superintendent of more than 100 branches while the bank was called Albida.
He relocated to Kuwait City in 1974 to work for the Commercial Bank of Kuwait. He was appointed as the Administration Manager of the International Division. He set up the first Atlas showroom in Souk Al Watya, Kuwait after being convinced of the huge demand for gold jewellery.
During the Gulf War, Kuwait was plundered, and Ramachandran lost everything, so he started in the United Arab Emirates. In regional gold trading, he pioneered the concept of mega-offers. Buyers won everything from gold bars to luxury cars. Atlas had over a million subscribers. This resulted in the now famous slogan, “ATLAS Jewelery-Trusted by Millions”, with Ramachandran serving as the brand ambassador and giving his face and voice to the advertisements.
