Who was Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1860 and died on 12 April 1962. Often referred to by his initials, MV, was the first Indian civil engineer, politician, and the 19th Diwan of Mysore. Served from 1912 to 1918.

He was the chief engineer of the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in the north-west suburb of Mysore city, the Lakshmi Talav Dam near Kolhapur in south-west Maharashtra, and designed a flood protection system to prevent the devastation caused by the annual floods that hit Hyderabad city. K also worked as one of the Chief Engineers of Hyderabad.

First female mining engineer


Akanksha Kumari is the first woman mining engineer to work in an underground mine. Hailing from Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, Akanksha has graduated from Birsa Institute of Technology Sindri. At the age of only 25, Akanksha Kumari joined Coal India Limited (CIL) and became the second woman mining engineer in CIL. Akanksha became the first Indian woman to join CIL in the Churi underground mines in the North Karanpura area in Jharkhand. Prior to joining CIL, Akanksha worked for three years at Hindustan Zinc Limited’s Balaria mine in Rajasthan.

Like Akanksha Kumari, Shivani Meena of Rajasthan has also created history in the field of engineering. Shivani Meena is the first excavation engineer of CCL. She made a special contribution to the Rajrappa project of CCL. Shivani used to work in a mechanized open mine in the Rajrappa area. She is the first woman engineer in the quarry cadre to work in an open mine. Shivani Meena hails from Bharatpur, Rajasthan. After completing Electrical Engineering from IIT Jodhpur, she took over the responsibility of maintenance and repair of heavy machines.
