Ashura is the tenth day of Muharram. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a fasting day to express thanks to Allah for saving Moses and his followers by dividing the Red Sea. According to Islam, the Prophet Muhammad called the month of Muharram the ‘Holy Month of Allah’. This year the month of Muharram in India started on 31st July. Ashura will start on the evening of 7th August and will end on 8th August this year in India.
It should be noted that the calendar of the Islamic world is based on the movement or cycle of the moon, so it is 13 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar (Christian calendar or English calendar). This is the reason why the date of Ashura varies every year.
History of Ashura:
On the day of Ashura, Muslim communities around the world mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and son of the fourth caliph Hazrat Ali (Muhammad’s son-in-law), who was killed in the Battle of Karbala. On this day the Muslim community participates in the mourning march (Tazia). The Tajiye are buried symbolically at a particular designated place.
Many Muslim youths take part in these processions, and some youths try to recreate the pain, these youths inflicting self-injury, suffering that Imam Hussein suffered when he was murdered at the Battle of Karbala. Will happen.
Significance of Ashura:
Muharram differs from other Islamic festivals in that it is a month of mourning and prayer, not celebration, rather than joy or any kind of celebration. It is believed by the Muslim community that in the battle of Karbala on the day of Ashura in 680 AD, Imam Hussain, the son of Hazrat Ali, was beheaded.
Shia Muslims mostly wear black clothes on this day, observe fast and join processions to remember Ashura. During the procession, people can be heard chanting “Ya Ali” and “Ya Hussain”.
Since Muharram itself means prohibition or haram, the Muslim community refrains from celebrating or celebrating any kind of joy during this time. On this day, Sunni Muslims generally observe Ashura by fasting and praying to Allah.

During the first ten days of the month, Shia Muslims flag themselves to rekindle the pain and sorrow of Ali and his deceased family members. Processions (Taziye) are also taken out with slogans of ya Ali and ya Hussain, many people wear black clothes (especially the Shia community) on the occasion of Muharram.
