How can anyone forget the heroine Mandakini from the movie ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’? After appearing in films, her name was Mandakini. Her real name is Yasmin Joseph. Mandakini is celebrating her 51st birthday today. She was born on 30 July 1963 in Meerut, UP in an Anglo-Indian family.
Mandakini was not Raj Kapoor’s first choice for the role of Ganga in ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’. Raj Kapoor had earlier planned to make this film with Sanjana Kapoor. Later, Dimple Kapadia’s screen test was also taken for the role of Ganga. Eventually this role came from Meerut resident Yasmin Joseph i.e. Mandakini.

At the age of 16, Mandakini worked with Bollywood’s biggest director Raj Kapoor. Mandakini retired from Hindi cinema very soon. He worked in Bollywood for only 6 years but in his short but explosive film career, he played memorable roles in many films. Mandakini’s biggest hit was ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’. This film took her to the heights of fame and she went on to rule the hearts of the audience overnight. In that period, he won a lot of applause by giving very bold scenes.

After this, she also appeared in Madhuri Dixit’s Tezaab (1988), but could not achieve the success she got from the first film. In the year 1996, Mandakini said goodbye to the film world, because none of her films could do special work at the box office.

Presently Mandakini runs the Mumbai Tibetan Herbal Center with her husband Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur. He was also a Buddhist monk. Mandakini also conducts yoga classes. Mandakini married Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur in the year 1990. After marriage, her husband did not change his religion and Mandakini later became a Buddhist monk. Both the couple love each other very much and they have two children, one son Rabeel and the other daughter Rabje Inaya Thakur.
