Annapurna Turkhud

Love Story of Rabindranath Tagore in English: The name of the woman we are going to tell you about is Annapurna Turkhud, who was affectionately called ‘Nalini’ by Rabindranath Tagore. A Marathi girl who came into the life of young Ravindra in such a way that she became a part of many of his poems.

Annapurna Turkhud was a resident of Bombay, she was also called by the name of Anna or Annaba. Annapurna was the daughter of Atmaram Pandurang Turkhud, a doctor from Mumbai. Annapurna’s father was a doctor as well as a social worker, who laid the foundation of Prathana Samaj.

This was the reason that many social workers and reformist citizens from across the country were also included in the friends and acquaintances of Atmaram Pandurang. Among them was Satyendranath Thakur, the elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore.

When Rabindranath came to live in the Turkhud family


Love Story of Rabindranath Tagore in English: Satyendranath Tagore wanted Ravindra to become good at English before going to England for the first time (1878) and so he sent young Ravindra to Mumbai to stay with the Turkhad family for some time. It is said that Ravindra stayed there for about two months. He was taught English by Anna, who grew up in his three years. Anna had come from England and her English was very good.

When Ravindra lovingly named Anna ‘Nalini’


It is said that while studying and teaching English, the closeness between the two grew and both fell in love. According to Krishna Kriplani’s book ‘Tagore a Life’, when the two grew in love, Ravindra lovingly named her ‘Nalini’. However, the love between the two lasted for a limited time and both could not live together in the future. At the same time, it is said that many poems of Rabindranath Thakur were dedicated to Anna.

Married to another after Ravindra went to England


After learning English for two months from Anna, young Ravindra went to England. After this Annapurna Turkhud married Harold Littledale, the Vice President of Baroda High School and College. After marriage, Anna went to England. But, he died at a very young age (33).

Ravindra’s father was against the relationship

It is believed that the relationship between the two was accepted by Anna’s father, but Rabindra’s father Debendranath Thakur was against it, as Anna had grown three years older than Rabindra. At the same time, it is also said that Anna and Anna’s father had also gone to Calcutta to meet Tagore’s father. At the same time, it is said that Debendranath Thakur had refused the relationship there.
