Huma Qureshi Biography


Huma Salim Qureshi (born 28 July 1986) is an Indian actress and model who predominantly appears in Hindi language films. She has also received three Filmfare Award nominations. Qureshi received a bachelor’s degree in history – with honors – from the University of Delhi, while she worked as a theater actor and model. After working in several theatrical productions, she moved to Mumbai and signed a two-year contract with Hindustan Unilever to appear in television commercials. While shooting for a Samsung mobile ad, Anurag Kashyap noticed her acting prowess and signed her for a three-film deal with his company.

Qureshi made her filmy debut in 2012 with a supporting role in the two-part crime drama ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. Her performance in the film earned her several nominations, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and Best Supporting Actress. In the same year, she played the lead female role in the romance ‘Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana’, followed by a role in ‘Ek Thi Daayan’.

 Early life


Huma Qureshi was born on 28 July 1986 in New Delhi, India to a Muslim family. Her father, Salim Qureshi, is a restaurateur who runs a chain of 10 restaurants (Salim); Her mother, Amina Qureshi (a Kashmiri), is a homemaker. She has three brothers, including actor Saqib Saleem. When Qureshi was young, her family shifted to Kalkaji, South Delhi.

 Huma completed her graduation in History with honors from Gargi College- University of Delhi. Later, she joined Act 1 Theater Group and performed in a few theaters plays. During her theater days, N K Shrma was her mentor and acting teacher. She has worked with several NGOs and assisted a documentary filmmaker.

In 2008, she moved to Mumbai to audition to act in a film, auditioning for a film, Junction, which never made it: “I never thought of coming to Mumbai or becoming an actress. But when my friend called me to audition for a film. Called Junction, it got me thinking. Sadly, the film was never made”.

 Qureshi signed a two-year contract with Hindustan Unilever to appear in its television commercials. She promoted a range of products including Samsung Mobiles (with Aamir Khan), Nerolac (with Shah Rukh Khan), Vita Marie, Saffola Oil, Mederma Cream, and Pear Soap.

 While shooting for an advertisement for Samsung Mobiles, director Anurag Kashyap was impressed by her acting ability and promised to use her in a film. Qureshi recalled: “I couldn’t believe him then. You hear a lot of such stories in this industry, so I couldn’t wait with bated breath.” Kashyap kept his promise, however, signing him for a three-film deal with his company Anurag Kashyap Films.
