By that time the East India Company had established the Allahabad University and the High Court.

The present Prayagraj was known only as Allahabad until a few years ago, the city was founded in 1853 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. It was Akbar who named it Allahabad and made it the provincial capital of the Mughal Empire. Emperor Jahangir made this city his headquarters from 1599 to 1604. With the decline of the Mughal Empire, the city fell into the hands of the British, who took it under their control in 1801. The city was the center of the rebellion in North India during the Revolt of 1857. Allahabad has been the hometown of Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The city is an important center for agriculture and industry. The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is taking important steps to show the historical importance of this city, due to which tourists have started getting attracted to this city. There are many coaching institutes available here for competitive exams. Here the High Court of Uttar Pradesh and Allahabad University (1887) are present. Aviation training center and many museums are also seen here.
