Hekani Jakhlu Kense was born in 1976. Hekani is an Indian politician and social worker from Nagaland. She founded Youthnet Nagaland, an NGO (non-governmental organization) to help the youth of Nagaland discover business opportunities. For her work, she was awarded the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2018. In the 2023 Nagaland Legislative Assembly elections, she became the first woman from Nagaland to be elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly along with Salhoutuonuo Kruse.
Hekani’s early life and education
Hekani Jakhlu was born in 1976 in Dimapur, in the eastern state of Nagaland, India. She was educated at Bishop Cotton Girls’ School in Bangalore and graduated in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi. She then studied for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Delhi and a Master of Laws at the University of San Francisco. Thus he is also a lawyer by profession.
Jakhlu’s career
After working in the United States, Jakhlu returned to Delhi and started her career as a lawyer. She was made a partner in the firm but seeing the number of youth moving from Nagaland to Delhi for the first time, she decided in 2006 to move to Kohima (the capital of Nagaland) to set up a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Youthnet. aimed at providing more employment opportunities to the youth of Nagaland.

As of 2018, Youthnet has 30 employees and the organization claims to have helped 23,500 people. It aims to help entrepreneurs take their ideas forward and set up a “Made in Nagaland” center in Kohima that sells products made by local artisans. After running for two years, the “Made in Nagaland” center opened an e-commerce platform in 2020.
Awards and honors
In recognition of her work, Hekani Jakhlu received the Nari Shakti Puraskar in 2018, India’s highest civilian award given only to women. She was the only person from the Northeast of India to be honored that year.
