British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Kerr sentenced by-the-book second-degree murder in Vancouver on September 21. With the sentence already a foregone conclusion on the laws of the Canadian province, the only real wild card was how long it would take for Grantham to plead guilty before the currently 24-year-old could apply for parole.
Leo Awards nominee Grantham turns himself into police shortly after shooting his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head at the family’s Squamish home north of Vancouver on March 31, 2020.
Charged with second-degree murder in B.C. There is no parole eligibility between 10 and 25 years. In that context, prosecutors recommended at a sentencing hearing earlier this year that Grantham receive up to 18 years of parole disqualification. The former actor’s legal team had suggested 12 years as a reasonable outcome. Apparently, Justice Kerr met him midway in his decision this week.
Originally charged with first-degree murder, Grantham has been in custody for the past two and a half years, law enforcement officials in Vancouver confirmed to Deadline today. Attending a mental health program since his arrest, Grantham is in the process of getting ready for transfer to a more permanent facility, sources say.
With about 30 credits on his resume, Grantham played Jeffrey Augustine in the fourth season of the CW soap Riverdale in 2019. While appearing briefly, the character had a significant role in the Archie Comics-based show. It was Jeffrey Augustine who killed the late Luke Perry and portrayed Fred Andrews in the series in a hit and run that changed almost everything on the show. Beginning his career in 2007, Grantham also appeared in the 2010 film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, as well as in Supernatural, iZombie, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
It was later revealed in court that after killing his mother, Grantham took video of the body and confessed to the murder on camera. A day later, after carefully arranging the body in a quasi-religious scene, Grantham came onto the road. With ever-changing intentions, he would at one point go on to try to kill Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, as he also wrote in a journal recorded as evidence. Grantham also considered mass shootings at Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University or the iconic Lions Gate Bridge.
Thankfully, none of this passed and Grantham instead went to an East Vancouver police shop and surrendered. “I killed my mother,” he is said to have bluntly announced to the police at the station’s front desk.
In March this year, the Multiple Credits actor expressed grief over his actions. “In the face of something so terrible, it seems so pointless to say sorry,” Grantham told the Vancouver Court of Justice and Justice Kerr, reading from a sheet of paper. “But from every fiber of my being, I am sorry.”
‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ child star Ryan Grantham sentenced to life for killing mother
Former child actor Ryan Grantham, currently 24, has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother.
Grantham, best known for her roles in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and the series “Riverdale”, pleaded guilty to murdering her 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite, inside her British Columbia home in March 2020. He was 21 years old at that time.
This week, a judge told B.C. According to the CBC, the Supreme Court in Vancouver has ruled that Grantham would not be eligible for parole for 14 years.
According to a Canadian news outlet, Justice Kathleen Kerr called the case “tragic and heartbreaking”, and described during sentencing how Grantham shot her mother with a rifle in the back of her head while playing the piano. He then recorded a GoPro video in which he confessed to the crime and recorded White’s body.
The court heard how Grantham lit candles, garlanded the piano, and prayed the next day to see if there might be a murder stampede. Prosecutors revealed that he loaded his car with guns, ammunition, and Molotov cocktails before heading east to Ottawa, and ordered instructions from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Rideau Cottage, according to CTV News. The map was printed with a residence.
However, during the drive, he reconsiders and turns himself into the Vancouver Police.
Grantham’s defense attorney argued that his client was struggling with his mental health and was attending counseling.
Kerr called his decision to hand himself over to the authorities a “saving grace” and told the court that in the months before the murder, Grantham was overwhelmed by urges to commit suicide and murder, during which he used marijuana increasingly and became violent online.
According to the Vancouver Sun, the Squamish, British Columbia native, now 24, began acting in elementary school, first landing a role in a fried chicken commercial. Ryan played over 30 roles from 2007 to 2019 and earned 30 acting credits during his career.
His last appearance was as Jeffrey Augustine in “Riverdale”, a darker reboot of the Archie Comics.
