Iris Apfel, born Iris Barrel on August 29, 1921, in Astoria, Queens, New York City, was the only child of Samuel and Sadye “Syd” Barrel (née Asofsky). Both her parents were Jewish, and despite being raised on a farm by her parents and grandparents, Iris frequently explored Manhattan, developing a fondness for Greenwich Village.
