Organize a casting in London to select five beautiful English young women who are unknown but are able to dance and sing on stage. Then cross your fingers in the hopes that this temporary girl band will be a hit. A well-known English manager Chris Herbert picked Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Adams in the mid-1990s.
Following? A global boom. The five ambitious, cohesive girls, determined to co-sign all of the songs proposed and not let themselves be walked off by an environment as sexist as the music industry of the time. The Spice Girls were born and, for four years, sold millions of records, filled huge halls, and briefly spread their slogan around the world as dominant (“Girl Power!”). “We created a movement inspired by 1960s feminism, but adapted to the 1990s,” says Melanie Brown.
Media storm
Yet a far cry from the feminist punk rock movement of American Riot grapple before them, the Spice Girls would both claim their feminism and play the game of capitalism by amassing a fortune thanks, among other things, to massive sales of many derivative products. From 1996 to 1998, the Spice Girls frenzy invaded everything. Which bothers a lot of people. “They even advertise crisps and sodas!” says Noel Gallagher of the group Oasis, grimacing.
A little too long, this documentary has the merit of recalling how the women’s group faced formidable tabloid press. Then, starting in 1999, and the departure of Geri Halliwell, the four Spice Girls continued to starve their careers.

Fun to watch Arte, a great defender of “culture” with a capital “C”, dedicate an evening to the icon of popular music, for a few years. But, as this documentary very well illustrates, the Spice Girls had gone beyond the status of artists at the top of the charts to become a phenomenon in society. The film largely dissects her – quite short – career at the top. As much as these five trendy girls have been praised, they have been accusing them of all evils. Her story of young people from a popular background, who are able to achieve thanks to music, is particularly sworn to with the enhanced marketing aspect and his many fascinating partnerships. This famous girl power movement, which started under the guise of feminism, eventually became a major marketing campaign in the service of merchandise and derivative products.
Even though no singers were interviewed for this documentary, numerous archives and interviews with very close collaborators of the time allow us to get a precise idea of the birth, development, and end of this musical and social phenomenon. A true ’90s phenomenon, the group composed of Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams, and Emma Bunton was all teenage girls’ dreams. Her debut single Wannabe topped the charts in over 30 countries. But what happens to five singers with phenomenal success? Let’s start with Melanie Brown. If she became famous thanks to the Spice Girls, then in 2000 the young singer released a single titled and even an album called Hot.
Unfortunately, there was no success.
The young woman then retired from the music scene by becoming a presenter and actress. She hosts a reality show called This Is My Moment. She also tries her hand at the cinema and even goes on to produce a report on Voodoo Africans called Les Monologues du Vagin.
In 2007, she participated in Dancing with the Stars and finished second in Tele-Hook. On the Dil side, she married Jimmy Gulzar in 1998, whom she gave a little girl a year later. In 2001, the couple separated. Next, she gets into a relationship with Eddie Murphy who will leave her when she is three months pregnant.
On April 3, 2007, she gave birth to a little girl, who was named Angel. After a long legal battle, Eddie Murphy will recognize the child. Two months later, she married Stephen Belafonte and gave birth to a third child, Madison. The two separated in March 2017.
Melanie Jayne Chisholm, better known as Melanie C, stands out during a casting in 1994. Thus before starting a solo career in 1999, she joined the Spice Girls. The singer found success with her debut album, Northern Star. Between December 2007 and February 2008, the Spice Girls teamed up for a tour called The Return of the Spice Girls.
She then became a juror on several television shows such as Asia’s Got Talent, The X Factor Australia, Superstar, or The Voice Kids. Melanie C is also starting her career as a DJ. In 2019, she reunited with the Spice Girls, without Victoria Beckham, for the Spiceworld Tour. In 2021, she also participated in the Dancing with the Stars show in the United States which ended after a few weeks. On September 15, 2022, she published her autobiography, Who I Am: My Story, in which she revealed that she was a victim of sexual assault in 1997.

She is definitely the most famous Spice Girl. Victoria Beckham also begins with her participation in the Spice Girls group. Having experienced success, the young woman is not at all determined to return to the shadows.

On January 21, 2017, Geri Halliwell gave birth to a baby boy named Montague George Hector.
