According to tradition, there once existed a friendship between a kite and a jackal. One day, witnessing two women observing the Jitiya Vrat, they both decided to fast as well. On that very day, a villager in the vicinity passed away, and his last rites were to be conducted beneath a banyan tree.

That night, it began to rain heavily, and the jackal, seeing the corpse, felt tempted. The jackal started devouring the corpse, while the kite sat perched on the banyan tree, refraining from eating. The kite did not break her Jitiya Vrat, while the jackal broke hers.

In the next birth, the kite and the jackal were born as two daughters of a Brahmin. The kite became the elder daughter named Sheelvati, while the jackal became the younger one named Kapuravati. Sheelvati and Kapuravati were married off to good families. Sheelvati bore seven sons, while Kapuravati’s children kept dying. Out of jealousy, Kapuravati started killing Sheelvati’s children. Witnessing this, the divine deity Jivit Vahan revived the severed heads of Sheelvati’s sons.

The next morning, all seven sons were seen working, which caused Kapuravati to faint. Sheelvati explained to her younger sister Kapuravati that in their previous life, she had broken the Jitiya Vrat, leading to the deaths of her children. Hearing this, Kapuravati died near the same banyan tree where the final rites of the villagers were conducted.
