Jivitputrika (Jitiya) Vrat Katha,
According to religious beliefs, Jitiya Vrat is related to the Mahabharata period. According to the legend, when Ashwatthama’s father died in the war, he became very angry. To avenge the death of his father, he went to the Pandavas’ camp and he went there and killed 5 innocent people. He thought that those 5 people were Pandavas.
But because of his misunderstanding, the Pandavas survived. When the Pandavas came in front of Ashwatthama, he came to know that he had killed the five sons of Draupadi instead of the Pandavas. When Arjuna came to know about this, he became very angry and took Ashwatthama captive and snatched the divine gem from him.
To avenge this, Ashwatthama planned to kill the child born in the womb of Abhimanyu’s wife Uttara. He used the Brahmastra to kill the unborn child, due to which Uttara’s womb was destroyed. But it was necessary to take birth to that child, so Lord Shri Krishna revived the dead child of Uttara in the womb.
The child of Uttara was alive after dying in the womb, hence the name of this fast was Jivitputrika. Since then all the mothers started observing this fast with full devotion for the long life of their children. Since then this fast has become famous in the world.
