British Empire Games 1930-50 – Initially, the Commonwealth Games came into existence under the same name. It started in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. More than 400 players from 11 countries participated in the six sports involved. After this, the games were held in London in 1934 and in Sydney, Australia in 1938. After the Second World War, these games were postponed for many years, and in 1950 they were held again in the city of Auckland, New Zealand.

British Empire and Commonwealth Games 1954-66 – The fifth Commonwealth Games were held in Vancouver, Canada 1954 under the same name. It was held in 1958 in Cardiff, Wales, in 1962 in Perth, Australia, and in 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica. Its popularity also continued to grow and the number of participating countries and players continued to grow.

British Commonwealth Games 1970-74 – For the third time the name of these games changed. This time in 1970 the games played in Edinburgh, Scotland were named as British Commonwealth Games. It was also organized in 1974 in Christchurch, New Zealand with the same name.

Commonwealth Games 1978-2022 – In 1978, the games held in Edmonton, Canada started under the name Commonwealth. In this way, its name was changed for the fourth time. Canada was followed by Brisbane in 1982, Edinburgh in 1986, Auckland in 1990, Victoria in 1994, Kuala Lumpur in 1998, Manchester in 2002, Melbourne in 2006, Delhi in 2010, Glasgow in 2014, and Gold Coast in 2018.

However, this time Britain’s Queen Elizabeth will not be able to attend its opening ceremony. His son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, will deliver the speech on his behalf. India’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony will be PV Sindhu and hockey team captain Manpreet Singh. The first flag bearer was to be Neeraj Chopra. But he has been ruled out of the games due to injury.

The opening ceremony of the 22nd Commonwealth Games will be held at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, England. The opening ceremony of the Games will take place at 11.30 pm Indian time. Commonwealth Games 2022: PV Sindhu to be India’s flag bearer at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

India’s two-time Olympic medalist badminton player PV Sindhu was on Wednesday named as the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent for the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. A total of 164 athletes will take part in the opening ceremony on Thursday.

Former world champion Sindhu is one of the strong contenders to win gold in women’s singles in Birmingham. They had won silver and bronze medals in the last two editions at Gold Coast and Glasgow respectively. Sindhu was also the flag bearer at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

“We are delighted to announce two-time Olympic medalist shuttler PV Sindhu as the flag bearer of Team India at the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games,” the Indian Olympic Association said in a statement. Two other deserving athletes along with Sindhu were considered to be the flag bearers of Team India – weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and boxer Lovlina Borgohain. Both are Olympic medalists. IOA Acting President Anil Khanna, Secretary General Rajeev Mehta, Treasurer Anandeshwar Pandey, and A four-member committee of Rajesh Bhandari shortlisted three athletes. Eventually, Anil Khanna and Rajeev Mehta chose Sindhu as the flag bearer for the opening ceremony.
